I am not sure when Charles drew this. I discovered it recently so it probably wasn’t all that long ago. What I like is the reification of the descriptive text — it is visible to the people in the picture. The people in the plane are saying “Get the words out of the sky!” and calling for “anti-word spray”. This dances on the edge of self-reference but in keeping with Charles’ restrained style doesn’t quite make the close. Charles frrequently bases his works on the forms of others but puts his own twist on it to show his independent creativity. Of the artist himself, he will only say “the work explains itself”.
