Phrases you do not want to hear from your wife, out of the blue, while driving to soccer practice:

I think we should get Alice a pony.

I agree. I think she needs a pony.

And Charles should probably have a dump truck while you’re at it.

What’s frightening is that one of my college friends has a daughter (Grace) is who one month older than Alice and has been having pony riding lessons for over half a year and can ride by herself. Worse, there is a horse farm in the same neighborhood block, so Alice could walk to it. I think there’s no hope.

Fortunately, we have no pony farms in the neighborhood. But someone recently had a used backhoe for sale in a parking lot that we drive by a lot. Liam really wanted it. Unfortunately (for him), I had to say no.
